Tamarind Rice

Ingredients                                                                                    tamarind rice

tamarind(2 finger sized pieces)

10 peeled garlic

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon black mustard seeds

2 teaspoons of urad dal

2 teaspoons of chana dal

2 teaspoons of fenugreek

bunch of curry leaves

3 dried red chillies

8 teaspoons of oil

salt as per requirement

Prerequisites

  • Add tamarind to a bowl with water.The water level should be just above the tamarind.Let the tamarind remain soaked in water for 1/2 an hour.
  • Meanwhile also start preparing rice, so that when the tamarind rice paste is ready rice will be available hot cooked.

Preparation of tamarind rice paste

  • Take a vessel which can withstand prolonged heating.
  • Add oil to it.Tamarind rice requires a bit excess oil.
  • Add 1 teaspoon mustard seeds to the oil.
  • When it starts to burst, add 2 teaspoons of urad dal, 2 teaspoons of chana dal and 2 teaspoons of fenu greek to the oil.
  • When urad dal and chana dal becomes golden brown, add a bunch of curry leaves, 3 split dried red chillies and 10 garlic pods to the oil.
  • Meanwhile take the bowl with tamarind.Squeeze the tamarind in water in the bowl.Make sure all the tamarind essence is in the water.Leave the extract behind.
  • Now add this tamarind essenced water to the vessel(one with the previously added ingredients) on stove.
  • Also add 1 teaspoon turmeric powder and salt to taste.
  • Now close this vessel with a lid.
  • Heat in medium flame until garlic pods get cooked.
  • The tamarind rice paste is getting ready.Stir the mixture at frequent intervals.

  •  Once the paste becomes thick and garlic is cooked, it is ready to use.
  • Add the paste to hot rice and stir it thoroughly.If you are a person who dislikes oil in food, then leave the oil aside and use only the thick paste.

Tips:The tamarind rice paste doesn’t get spoilt easily because of a bit excess oil.So you can refridgerate it and use it.When you want to have tamarind rice, take the required amount of paste from fridge and mix it with hot rice.Working women can prepare the paste during sundays and use it during weekdays to prepare lunch as and when required.

Tamarind rice is mainly given in temples as prasatham.Even when making short journeys, people who take food from home usally make tamarind rice since it lasts long.
